I’m Travis Decker, owner of Atomic Auto, an independent auto repair shop at 610 NE 102nd Ave in Portland, Oregon. I opened the shop in June 2005, and we’ve spent the years since specializing in hybrids and EVs—mostly Toyota and Lexus, along with Honda and other Asian makes, hybrid or regular gasoline powered. Our Facebook page is literally named “portlandpriusservice,” which tells you where a lot of our days go.
Atomic Auto is Portland’s hybrid and EV repair specialist, serving Oregon drivers since 2005. Owner Travis Decker, an ASE Master Technician (L1, L3), leads diagnosis-first repair for Toyota, Lexus, Honda, and other hybrids and EVs – from high-voltage battery diagnosis to routine maintenance – at 610 NE 102nd Ave, Portland.
ASE Certifications
I hold three ASE credentials:
- ASE Master Technician
- ASE L1 — Advanced Engine Performance Specialist
- ASE L3 — Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist
The credential names say it plainly: L1 is advanced engine performance—the deep diagnostic side of driveability and emissions problems—and L3 is light duty hybrid and electric vehicles, which is the work our shop is built around.
How I Approach Repair
Diagnosis comes first in our shop. Random troubleshooting wastes time and money, so when a car comes in with a warning light or a driveability concern, we don’t just plug in a scanner and read the first code that pops up. We follow the 6-Step Process—the same systematic method dealer technicians use—to confirm the concern, isolate the cause, and fix the actual problem instead of throwing parts at it.
Hybrids complicate diagnosis in ways regular cars don’t. The different systems communicate with each other, so a single problem can light up multiple warnings at once—and the order we diagnose codes in matters. Some codes set as the result of a fault in another system, and fixing them in the wrong order means replacing parts that weren’t actually broken.
For Toyota and Lexus vehicles we use Toyota’s factory Techstream diagnostic software, the same tool the dealers use, and we reference Toyota’s Technical Information System for repair procedures, wiring diagrams, and Technical Service Bulletins. And we don’t assume a repair worked: we repeat the same tests that originally duplicated the problem before the car goes back to you.
