Every 5,000 miles, the same fourteen checks in the same order. Some of them a dealer or a quick-lube lane will not do.
- Tires, brakes, spark plugs, coolant and belts get replaced when they wear out. Those are separate jobs, not part of this list.
- We keep a few waiter appointments each week, about 60 minutes. Otherwise drop it off and it is ready by 5pm.
Hybrid Intermediate Service
Every 5,000 miles- Test drive. Note engine performance, vibration, noise, cruise control operation, and/or alignment issues. Confirm proper operation of instruments and warning lights. Scan for fault codes if needed

- Perform complete visual inspection of engine compartment, engine air filter, including noting fluid levels and leaks. Oil level before service? Check belt(s) and accessory pulleys.
- Check 12v battery, clean terminals as needed
- Perform complete visual inspection of undercarriage, suspension, shocks, bushings, exhaust, etc
- Check tires for proper wear. Document any irregular wear noticed. Adjust tire pressures to specification, rotate if needed. Check spare tire pressure and condition
- Perform 4-wheel brake inspection. Measure brake lining thickness, visually inspect rotors, and inspect all brake hydraulic hoses
- Run engine to verify oil light function and verify oil level after service is right to the FULL mark
- Reset maintenance alert, stamp booklet (if applicable), and install sticker for next service on windshield

Why 5,000 miles, not 10,000.
The sticker is a compromise.
The 10,000-mile interval is about fuel economy and warranty cost, not about keeping your engine clean for 200,000 miles. We build for the second.

Oil holds combustion byproducts in suspension until the next change. Stretch it, and they drop out as sludge and varnish on the rings.

How long does a Prius 12V battery last?
There is no set interval. It depends on use, climate, and how often the car sits. Regular testing (we check it every 5,000-mile service) is more reliable than a calendar.
How often should I check the oil on a Gen 2 Prius?
Every 1,000 miles is a good habit for these cars, and always before a long trip, especially once the car is past about 140,000 miles. Because there's no oil light and the engine can burn oil without leaking, regular dipstick checks are the only reliable way to catch a low level before it becomes engine damage.
How do you check suspension bushings at the 5k service?
We perform an inspection of your suspension every 5,000 miles with our Intermediate service and monitor the aging process over time. If we see the rubber starting to tear or separate to the point of affecting your safety or tire wear, we will show you exactly why it's time to replace them. We will never recommend a repair just because a part looks old.
What is a Clean and Lube service?
This is the most important brake maintenance for hybrids. Since the brakes don't move much, the grease on the caliper pins can dry out and seize, causing the brakes to drag and ruining your MPG. We take everything apart, clean the rust, lubricate the pins, and put it back together, which keeps your original factory brakes working for 150,000+ miles.
