Don’t Put a Dragon in Your Doghouse

Short version: A car is easy to keep alive when the repair world has already seen thousands of them — parts on the shelf, tooling anybody can buy, documented failures, and technicians who have done the job before. Those cars are horses. Cars the repair world hasn’t seen are dragons, and dragons cost dragon money. A car can be a dragon because almost none were built, or because it’s brand new and the support simply doesn’t exist yet. Either kind is fine to own — as long as you own it on a timer and get out before the warranty does.

We’ve written before about buying a used hybrid or EV, and the line that customers quote back to us more than anything else in it is this one: we fix horses, we don’t fix dragons. People remember it. What they usually get wrong is which cars are dragons.

Almost everyone assumes it’s about how rare the car is. It isn’t — not really. Rarity is a symptom. Here’s the actual test.

The test is not how many were built. It’s how many the repair world has seen.

When a car has been on the road in volume for years, an entire invisible support system grows up around it. Parts manufacturers tool up for the common failures, because there’s a market. Aftermarket scan tool companies write the software, because there’s a market. Salvage yards stock it. Forums fill up with people who took the thing apart and photographed it. Shops like ours learn what breaks at 90,000 miles and at 180,000, because we’ve had a hundred of them across the lifts.

None of that exists on day one. All of it is earned, slowly, by a lot of cars going a lot of miles and breaking in front of a lot of people.

So the real question about any car isn’t “how many did they make?” It’s:

When this car breaks in eight years, will anybody know what to do with it, and will the part exist?

That reframing matters, because it means a brand-new mainstream car from a huge manufacturer can be every bit as much of a dragon as a rare one. Different reason, same outcome for you.

There are two ways to end up with a dragon.

Dead-end dragons: nobody built enough, or the platform got killed

This is the kind people already understand. It’s the compliance cars — vehicles built in tiny numbers mostly to satisfy emissions regulations, never because anyone wanted to sell them.

The first-generation Fiat 500E is the one we always come back to, because Fiat’s own CEO publicly asked people not to buy it and said the company lost about $14,000 on every one. They made somewhere around 12,000 to 15,000. The RAV4 EV is even stranger: a Toyota body with a Tesla drivetrain, 2,489 built, sold only in California. When one breaks, neither company fully owns it.

The Ford Focus Electric belongs on the list too. So do plenty of gas cars nobody thinks of as exotic — the orphans of dead platforms, the last model year before a redesign, the one trim level with the engine they only used for two years.

The tell isn’t the badge on the hood. It’s whether the specific drivetrain in front of you was ever built in numbers.

Newborn dragons: mainstream car, brand-new everything

This is the kind that gets people hurt, because it doesn’t look risky at all.

A customer emailed us not long ago after buying a brand-new turbocharged hybrid minivan from a major manufacturer. Nice family, doing everything right — they wanted a trusted independent shop, they wanted a hardwired dashcam done properly, they wanted to know whether the extended warranty was worth it. And they told us their plan: keep it more than ten years, long enough that their daughter might learn to drive in it.

That van is going to sell in real volume. The manufacturer is enormous. There is nothing rare about it. And for the next several years it is functionally a dragon, because:

  • Nobody has taken one apart at 120,000 miles yet, because none of them have 120,000 miles.
  • The failure patterns aren’t documented, because the failures haven’t happened yet.
  • The aftermarket hasn’t tooled up for parts that haven’t started failing.
  • There is no community of people who’ve fixed one.

A new car’s support ecosystem is a promise, not an inventory. It arrives on a schedule nobody controls, and — this is the part that matters — it usually arrives right around the time your factory warranty is leaving.

That’s the trap. The years when the car is easiest to get fixed are exactly the years someone else is paying. The years you’re paying are the years the knowledge is still catching up.

The four things a dragon doesn’t have

Run this on any car before you buy it. You can do all four from your phone on the dealer lot.

1. A parts pipeline that will still exist in ten years. Not “can I get a part today” — of course you can, it’s new. The question is whether this drivetrain is shared across enough vehicles that somebody will still be making parts for it after the model is discontinued. A part used in one low-volume trim is a part that quietly disappears.

2. Diagnostic tooling an independent shop can actually buy. This one is invisible to buyers and it dominates your out-of-warranty life. Some manufacturers publish repair information and sell subscriptions to their factory diagnostic software that runs on an ordinary PC. Others run everything through proprietary tablets that are expensive to acquire and maintain, or restrict the good stuff to dealers. If your shop can’t talk to the car, your shop can’t fix the car, and you don’t have a choice about where you go anymore.

3. Documented failure data. Somebody, somewhere, needs to have already learned what goes wrong. If you search the year, make, model and the words “common problems” and get nothing, that’s not good news. That’s an absence of data, and absence of data is not evidence of reliability.

4. People who have done the repair before. The first time anyone does a job it takes three times as long and there’s a real chance of doing it wrong. On a horse, you’re the thousandth. On a dragon, you’re paying someone to learn.

A dragon costs dragon money — and that’s the actual injury

Here’s what we see go wrong, and it isn’t really about the car breaking. Cars break. It’s about the gap between what someone budgeted and what the repair costs.

People frequently buy these vehicles because they were affordable. That’s the whole reason the car got picked. Then a repair arrives that is priced like a European luxury car, because under the skin the engineering complexity is comparable — turbochargers, direct injection, high-voltage systems, a dozen networked modules — and complexity is what sets a repair bill, not the sticker price.

Nobody buys a used BMW without at least hearing that BMWs are expensive to fix. That warning is baked into the culture. There’s no equivalent warning attached to an affordable car with an equally complicated drivetrain, so people walk in with a Camry-sized repair budget and get handed a bill built for something else entirely.

The car isn’t defective for costing what it costs. The mismatch is the injury. And the mismatch is completely avoidable — if somebody tells you before you sign.

So don’t buy a dragon? No. Buy it on a timer.

We want to be careful here, because “never buy X” is not honest advice and it isn’t what we tell people.

Dragons are often genuinely nice to drive. New hybrids and EVs are quiet, quick, and efficient in ways nothing from 2010 can match. The features are better. The safety equipment is better. If you want the new thing, buy the new thing.

Just buy it with an exit plan, and make the exit plan part of the purchase decision instead of something you’ll think about later.

Own it on a timer. Decide on the day you buy it roughly when you intend to be out. Our own bias is to be gone before the powertrain coverage expires — not the day before, but with real margin, while the car still has warranty left to sell to the next person. That’s our opinion, not a rule of physics. But if you can’t say out loud when you plan to leave, you haven’t finished making the decision.

The warranty is most of what you bought, so protect it obsessively. On a dragon, the warranty isn’t a nice extra — it’s the entire support system, standing in for a repair ecosystem that doesn’t exist yet. That means:

  • Don’t modify anything, and be especially careful about anything that touches factory wiring. Want a dashcam? Get one that plugs into the accessory socket, comes out in ten seconds, and requires no modification to the car. Don’t hand anyone a reason to argue about an electrical claim.
  • Keep the service records, all of them, organized. A stack of receipts is worth real money in a warranty dispute.
  • Service it where the claim will be easiest to win. For a brand-new vehicle that usually means the dealer during the covered years — not because dealers are better technicians, but because it removes an argument.
  • Get the recalls and software campaigns done. Manufacturers have denied coverage over skipped updates.

Learn your own maintenance schedule from the book in your glovebox. Then follow it — and know it well enough to recognize when you’re being sold something that isn’t on it. Service advisors are usually paid on commission. That’s not a scandal, it’s just a fact you should know while someone is recommending a fluid flush.

If you’re keeping it past the warranty, budget honestly. Not “I hope nothing breaks.” An actual number, set aside, sized for a complicated car.

Or — and this is the one nobody says out loud — buy a horse instead. Travis daily-drives a 2004 Prius with 345,000 miles on it, and has ordered a Slate truck to replace it, largely because it has crank windows and almost no technology in it. That’s a real preference, not a bit. There is enormous value in a vehicle where every failure has already happened to somebody else.

Reading a warranty before you trust it

Two things worth checking on any new car, because they surprise people:

The headline number usually isn’t one number. A long powertrain warranty may be original-owner-only, dropping to something much shorter for a second owner — which matters both when you buy used and when you sell. Kia’s own warranty manual is a clear example of how these tables work: Basic coverage runs 60 months/60,000 miles, and the powertrain warranty runs 120 months/100,000 miles marked Original Owner Only.

The screens are not covered like the drivetrain. Infotainment usually carries a much shorter term than everything around it. In that same Kia manual, the audio and entertainment system — the manual’s language covers the original equipment radio, CD player, rear-seat entertainment, or navigation system — is covered for the first 36 months/36,000 miles, while the basic warranty around it runs to 60/60,000. On a modern car where the screen controls the climate system, that’s not a trivial line item.

Find these in your own Warranty and Consumer Information Manual before you talk to anybody about an extended service contract. The manual is the document that governs. The finance office’s summary of it is a sales pitch.

What we can and can’t do for you

We’ll service a dragon. We do it all the time — that’s how we know what we know.

What we can’t do is invent an ecosystem that doesn’t exist. If a manufacturer won’t sell us diagnostic access, we can’t diagnose to the depth we’d like. If a part is discontinued, being good at our jobs doesn’t make it appear. We’ve hit both walls on vehicles barely ten years old.

We’ll tell you when we’re at that limit instead of guessing on your dime. And we’d much rather have this conversation before you buy than after.

Before you buy: the short version of the checklist

  1. Is this exact drivetrain built in volume, or is it a one-model special?
  2. Can an independent shop buy the diagnostic tooling and repair information?
  3. Does documented failure data exist yet — and if not, are you comfortable being the data?
  4. What does the warranty actually say? Read the coverage table yourself. Note what’s original-owner-only, and note the term on the screens.
  5. What’s your exit date? If you can’t name one, either name one or plan to fund the repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a car a “dragon”?

A dragon is a vehicle the repair ecosystem hasn’t built up around yet — or has abandoned. Parts are hard to source, diagnostic tooling is restricted or expensive, failure patterns aren’t documented, and few technicians have done the repair before. Rarity is one route there. Being brand new is another.

Isn’t a brand-new car from a major manufacturer automatically a horse?

Not for its first several years. Volume on the sales floor doesn’t mean volume in the repair world. Until a lot of these cars have accumulated a lot of miles and started failing, the parts supply, tooling, documentation, and technician experience are all still forming. That’s usually complete right around the time the factory warranty is ending.

Should I just never buy one?

No. Buy it if you want it — but decide when you’re getting out before you sign, protect the warranty like it’s part of the product (because on a new platform, it mostly is), and don’t assume an affordable purchase price implies affordable repairs.

Does buying an extended service contract solve this?

It’s a different question from the one in this article, and it depends heavily on the specific contract, what it excludes, and where it lets you get work done. Two things to check before you decide: whether the contract restricts you to dealer service, and whether the covered components are actually the ones likely to fail on your vehicle. Read it — the whole thing, exclusions included — rather than buying from a verbal summary.

How do I check whether my shop can work on a car before I buy it?

Are hybrids and EVs dragons?

Some are, some aren’t, and the badge doesn’t tell you. Toyota has refined essentially one hybrid architecture for about thirty years, which is why the parts, tooling, and knowledge around it are so deep. Other manufacturers have introduced several structurally different hybrid systems in far less time — Hyundai and Kia’s approach, for example, puts the electric motor between the engine and a conventional automatic transmission with a clutch, which is a fundamentally different machine from Toyota’s clutchless planetary power-split, and their second-generation version of that system is only now arriving. Newer isn’t worse. But each new architecture restarts the clock on everything in the list above.
