Every month somebody stands at our counter and asks some version of the same question: “Where should I actually buy a used car?” Fair question. After enough years of seeing what rolls into the shop a week after somebody bought it, we have opinions.

The honest answer is a short list. Here it is, along with what a recommendation from us does and doesn’t mean. The second part matters more than the names.

What it means when we name a dealer here

It means we know the business, and we trust the way they operate: cars prepped honestly, clean titles, and people who don’t disappear when something goes wrong the week after the sale.

It does not mean every car on their lot is a good idea for you. A dealer chooses inventory that sells. Picking the right model is still your job — and ours, if you ask us before you buy.

Powell Motors — old-school Portland, in the best way

Powell Motors on NE Grand Ave has been family-operated since 1933, which makes it one of the oldest used-car dealers in Portland. They sell regular used cars, trucks, and SUVs — no gimmicks, no games. When someone wants a plain, dependable used car from people who’ve been doing this the right way for generations, this is where we send them.

Platt Auto Group — the used-EV specialists

If you’re shopping for a used electric car, Platt Auto Group in Milwaukie is the specialist operation. We’ve known Greg Platt for 30 years. They deal in used EVs all day, every day, and a friend of ours bought a Bolt EUV from them sight-unseen and it worked out fine.

One caveat, and we say it in the buying guide too: even a good dealer with clean inventory can sell you the wrong car. Platt carries a range of models, including some low-volume ones we’d steer most people away from. That’s not a knock on them — no dealer stocks only the cars we’d pick. E&J Motors — a solid mixed lot on 82nd

E&J Motors on SE 82nd Ave is another dealer we know and recommend. Their lot is a mix, heavy on the makes we service every day — Toyotas, Hondas, Subarus — and usually a few EVs too. We have a relationship with them, and we’re comfortable sending people their way.

What about everywhere else?

Private party. Some of the best used-car buys are private-party sales, and we’re not going to talk you out of them. Just understand there’s no safety net: no dealer prep, and nobody to call if it goes sideways a week later. The pre-purchase inspection carries all the weight there.

Auctions and salvage titles. An auction car is a mystery box you usually can’t inspect first. And on a hybrid or EV, a salvage title is a hard no — hidden battery damage and voided warranties make it a different kind of risk than a salvage gas car. The buying guide goes into why.

The big chains and online retailers. Not being on this list isn’t a condemnation — this list is places we know personally, and it’s short on purpose. Wherever the car comes from, the same rule applies: get it inspected before you buy.

The one thing we’d tell you no matter where you shop

Get a pre-purchase inspection. A seller who balks at one just told you everything you need to know. We do them regularly, and on hybrids and EVs we’ll check the things a test drive can’t show you — battery health, model-specific weak points, and whether that particular car has been taken care of. Common Questions

Do I still need a pre-purchase inspection if the dealer is on this list?

Yes. A trustworthy dealer lowers the odds of title problems and hidden damage, but it doesn’t change the mechanical reality of the specific car you’re buying. Every used car is its own machine with its own history, and an inspection is how you learn that history before the money changes hands.
