Short version: The first-generation Kia Niro hybrid (2017–2022) has a part most buyers have never heard of — an Exhaust Heat Recovery System, or EHRS, built right into the exhaust and catalytic converter assembly. It runs engine coolant through the exhaust to warm the car up faster. When it fails, coolant leaks internally into the exhaust and burns off, so there’s no puddle in the driveway — just a slow, mysterious coolant loss that looks exactly like a blown head gasket. The fix is expensive — replacing the assembly is a real repair bill, not an afternoon job. It’s not a recall, so nobody’s going to fix it for free, and on a used Niro the factory warranty that might have covered it is almost certainly gone. Our bottom line: we don’t recommend buying a first-generation Niro once it’s high-mileage and out of warranty — and if you’re shopping used anyway, this is the failure to check for before you buy.
We recently had a 2017 Niro come in with about 117,000 miles on it — not even high mileage by hybrid standards. The customer’s only complaint was a slow coolant leak — nothing dramatic, just topping off the reservoir more often than made sense. We pressure-tested the cooling system and found the leak wasn’t external at all. It was leaking internally, inside the catalytic converter assembly, and replacing it was an expensive repair. That car is what sent us digging — and what we found in the public record is that this is a well-documented problem on the first-generation Niro, one Kia itself has written up in a service bulletin.

What’s Actually Failing: The EHRS
Most hybrids do something clever to get better fuel economy: they capture waste heat from the exhaust to warm the engine and cabin faster on cold mornings, so the gas engine spends less time running cold and inefficient. On the Niro, that job belongs to the Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS) — a small heat exchanger that circulates engine coolant through a unit that’s physically integrated into the exhaust and catalytic converter assembly.
Kia has documented two related failure modes on this system. In their own service bulletin (Kia Pitstop PS709, September 2021, covering 2017–2022 Niro hybrids — you can read the full bulletin on file with NHTSA), they describe an overheating condition caused by a valve inside the EHRS sticking shut:
“Overheating may occur due to a bypass valve in the Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS) stuck in the closed position. A stuck closed bypass valve may cause exhaust gas to excessively heat up engine coolant in the heat exchanger.”
The failure we see more often at the shop is the other one: the heat exchanger develops an internal leak, and coolant starts weeping into the hot exhaust. Hyundai — which uses the same basic system on its hybrid siblings — describes that failure precisely in its own bulletin, 23-EM-009H:
“…may exhibit coolant leakage, engine overheating, and white smoke from the exhaust due to an internal leak at the Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS) portion of the center muffler assembly.”
One important nuance, because we care about getting this right: people describe this as “coolant leaking into the catalytic converter,” and that’s a fair way to say it — the EHRS shares the same assembly as the catalyst. But the part that’s actually failing is the heat exchanger, not the catalyst brick itself. It matters for the repair, and it matters for anyone trying to research the problem.
Why It Fools People (and Cheap Inspections)
Here’s what makes this one sneaky. A normal coolant leak leaves evidence — a puddle, a stain, a sweet smell, a low reservoir with a wet hose somewhere. This one doesn’t. The coolant disappears internally, burning off in the exhaust. So the symptoms look like something else entirely:
- Coolant level that slowly drops with no visible leak
- Engine overheating, sometimes shortly after a cold start
- White smoke or a sweet smell from the tailpipe
If that list sounds like a blown head gasket, you’re not wrong — those are the classic head-gasket symptoms too. That’s exactly why this gets misdiagnosed. A quick once-over in a parking lot won’t catch it, and even a shop can chase it in the wrong direction if they’re not familiar with the platform. The reliable way to find an active leak is a cooling-system pressure test, which is how we caught it on the 2017 that came through our bay.
How Common Is It — Really?
We’ll be straight with you, because this is where a lot of car articles start exaggerating: nobody can tell you what percentage of Niros will do this. There’s no published failure rate for the EHRS, and we haven’t personally seen enough of them to put an honest number on it either. If a website quotes you a precise “X% fail” figure, they made it up.
Here’s what the public record does support:
- Kia acknowledged it. The strongest signal isn’t a forum post — it’s that Kia issued a technical service bulletin covering the 2017–2022 Niro that describes this exact overheating-and-coolant condition and the EHRS component behind it. Hyundai issued a matching bulletin for the same system on its hybrids. Manufacturers write those when a failure turns up often enough to need a documented repair procedure, so this is a known pattern, not a fluke.
- Owners report it consistently. There are multiple multi-page threads on the main Kia Niro owner forum, plus recurring posts on Reddit’s r/KiaNiro, all describing the identical symptoms — slowly vanishing coolant, no external leak, sometimes white smoke. It’s logged in the federal complaint database (NHTSA) and documented on CarComplaints under the exact name “Exhaust Heat Recovery Unit Failed.”
Now, you’ll see the Niro described as reliable, and there’s real truth to that — Kia has scored at or near the top of J.D. Power’s dependability rankings in recent years. But look closely at where those scores come from, because it changes everything for a used buyer. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study, by its own description, measures “the problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles.” Its Initial Quality Study measures the first 90 days of ownership. In other words, the data that makes the Niro look reliable is a snapshot of the car when it’s young, low-mileage, still under warranty, and in the hands of its first owner.
That is not the car you’re buying used. A 2017 Niro with 117,000 miles is the exact opposite of what those studies measure — and the EHRS leak is precisely the kind of failure that surfaces years later, out of warranty, on the second or third owner’s dime. Early-life reliability scores tell you almost nothing about that stage of the car’s life.
What this issue is not is a recall. There’s no campaign that makes it a free fix — Kia’s paperwork treats it as a service item, not a safety defect. That distinction matters to a buyer: a recall gets fixed on the manufacturer’s dime; a service bulletin does not.
A separate point worth knowing while you’re checking: the Niro does have genuine safety recalls from these years, and they involve fire risk — most notably a hydraulic clutch actuator that can leak and, in some cases, ignite. That’s a different part and a different problem from the coolant leak (and it’s the defect behind the current Kia/Hyundai hybrid class action — also not the EHRS). But a completed recall is exactly the kind of thing you want confirmed before you buy. Any Kia dealer can check a VIN, and a Carfax usually shows recall work too. What It Costs to Fix
The honest repair — replacing the EHRS/exhaust assembly — is expensive. It’s a significant parts-and-labor bill, enough that on a high-mileage Niro it can start to rival the value of the car. This is not a minor service item.
You’ll also see a cheaper workaround discussed on owner forums: looping the coolant hose to bypass the EHRS. Two things to be clear about. First, Kia only uses that loop as a temporary diagnostic step in its bulletin — a way to confirm the EHRS is the leak, not a repair. Second, the EHRS is built into the catalytic-converter assembly, which is a federally regulated emissions-control device. Permanently disabling or bypassing an emissions-control device isn’t something a licensed shop can legally do, so it’s not a service we offer or will perform. What an owner decides to do to their own car is their call — but we can’t sanction it or carry it out, and it can create its own emissions-compliance problems. The repair we’ll do is a proper replacement of the failed assembly.
The Warranty Reality for a Used Niro
This is the part that catches used buyers off guard, so let’s be precise about it. Kia’s warranty on the Niro hybrid looks generous on paper, but the fine print matters enormously the moment you’re the second owner.
Straight from Kia’s official Niro hybrid warranty manual:
- Basic (bumper-to-bumper): 5 years / 60,000 miles.
- Powertrain: 10 years / 100,000 miles — but for the original owner only. Kia’s manual states it plainly: “The Power Train Limited Warranty is not transferable to subsequent owners.” For a second or subsequent owner, powertrain coverage drops to 5 years / 60,000 miles. So that famous “10-year Kia warranty” you may have heard about? If you’re buying used, it mostly isn’t yours.
- Hybrid system (battery pack, starter-generator, power control unit, traction motor): 10 years / 100,000 miles (10 years / 150,000 miles on California-emissions cars). This one generally does carry over to you.
- Federal emissions warranty on the catalytic converter and engine control module: 8 years / 80,000 miles. This is federal law, not just Kia policy, and it’s the coverage most relevant to the exhaust assembly.
Now apply that to a real car. A 2017 Niro with 117,000 miles — the one that came through our shop — has run out of every one of these:
- Basic 5/60: expired on both age and miles.
- Powertrain: expired past the 100k mark regardless, and would have been capped at 5/60 for a used buyer anyway.
- Hybrid system 10/100: past the 100k mile cap.
- Emissions 8/80 on the cat: expired on both age and miles.
In other words, on a high-mileage used Niro, this is a repair that comes entirely out of your pocket. If you’re looking at a lower-mileage, newer Niro, it’s worth checking exactly where it falls against that 8-year/80,000-mile emissions coverage — that’s the window that could still have your back on this specific part.
Our Take: We’d Steer You Away From a High-Mileage, Out-of-Warranty Niro
We’ll say it plainly, because it’s the whole point of this article: we don’t recommend buying a first-generation Niro once it’s high-mileage and out of warranty. In its early years, under warranty, it’s a fine car — that’s what those reliability scores reflect. Past that point the math changes, and the EHRS leak is a clean example of why.
And don’t let a modest odometer reading talk you out of that caution. The Niro that came through our shop had about 117,000 miles — which sounds low for a hybrid, especially parked next to the 200,000-plus-mile Priuses we see every week. That “it’s barely broken in” feeling is exactly the trap. Against Kia’s headline 10-year/100,000-mile number, 117k reads like a car that’s barely out of warranty. But the coverage that actually applies to this repair — the federal emissions warranty on the catalytic converter — ran out at 80,000 miles. On the part that fails here, that “low-mileage” car had been on its own for nearly 40,000 miles. Low miles do not mean low risk on this specific failure.
Picture the spot an out-of-warranty Niro puts you in when the heat exchanger lets go: an expensive, model-specific repair, with no manufacturer help — and Kia and Hyundai don’t make out-of-warranty ownership easy. As we put it in our general used-hybrid guide, they “have a track record of discontinuing parts, providing limited diagnostic tooling to independents, and offering what we’ll diplomatically call inconsistent dealer experiences.” So you’re exposed on both ends: a costly repair that’s specific to this platform, and a parts-and-service pipeline that doesn’t do independent shops or owners many favors.
That’s the difference between a horse and a dragon, to borrow the framing from that guide. A high-mileage Toyota hybrid is a horse — parts everywhere, anyone can work on it, a known quantity at 200,000 miles. A high-mileage, out-of-warranty Niro leans toward dragon: when it needs something specific, your options narrow and your costs climb. None of this makes the Niro a bad car — it makes the used, out-of-warranty ones a risk most buyers never price in.
If You’re Set on One Anyway, Here’s What to Check
If you’ve weighed all that and still want to look at a used Niro — maybe it’s priced right, maybe it’s lower-mileage with warranty left — here’s what we’d check before you commit:
- Look at the coolant. Check the reservoir level and ask the seller how often they top it off. “Every so often” is a red flag on this car.
- Watch a cold start. Start it stone-cold and watch the temperature behavior and the tailpipe. Overheating soon after a cold start, or white smoke with a sweet smell, points straight at this issue.
- Ask for service records. Any history of “coolant leak, no cause found,” repeated top-offs, or exhaust/heat-exchanger work tells you a lot.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection that includes a cooling-system pressure test. This is the test that actually finds an active leak. A generic once-over won’t.
- Email us the Carfax first ([email protected]). Same advice as our main guide — we’d rather look at the history before you fall in love with the car than try to talk you out of it afterward.
One honest limit, and it’s the most important thing on this page: an inspection can only tell you about problems the car has right now. It can’t tell you when — or whether — the EHRS will fail down the road. A cooling-system pressure test that comes back clean today means the heat exchanger isn’t leaking today. It does not mean it won’t start leaking at 125,000 miles, or 140,000, six months after you sign the paperwork. This is a part that can be perfectly fine right up until it isn’t, and no shop’s tools can see that coming. That’s the real reason we lean against these cars out of warranty: you can’t inspect your way out of a failure that hasn’t happened yet — and when it happens, you own the bill.
